Environment & Sustainability

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is a values-led, family-owned, iconic mountain destination with the purpose of enriching the lives of its guests and employees. With an enduring commitment to the surrounding landscape, wildlife and authentic community character, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort strives to live by its values by reducing environmental impact and in doing so runs its buildings, lifts and snowmaking on wind energy.

Our Approach

Here at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, we strive to provide the best experiences for our guests, while keeping the environment top of mind of at all times.

Air Quality, Climate Change Mitigation & Energy Efficiency
In 2019 JHMR transitioned to 100% Green Power for all of our electricity needs. This includes all of our on-mountain lifts, facilities, and base area operations. We directly source wind power from Horse Butte Wind Farm in neighboring Idaho; the closest wind energy source directly tied to our local grid.

Environmental Building & Design
We are working directly with our contractors and designers to source and build the most sustainable buildings we can. Starting in 2020, all future projects will undergo a thorough design review process to ensure best practices and sustainable material choices are integrated into the build resulting in environmentally certificated buildings.
Environmental Preferable Purchasing
Re-thinking and re-defining our purchasing strategy in all departments of our business to focus on sustainable products, materials, sourced food, office supplies, and merchandise is a direct step forward in reducing our carbon footprint at JHMR.
Environmental Education & Outreach
JHMR conducts children's programs annually with staff from the Teton Raptor Center who bring in live birds to the resort for educational purposes. JHMR is also currently developing an illustrated resource guide of the surrounding flora and fauna for an educational reference tool when experiencing the mountain in summer and winter.
Natural Habitat Conservation & Restoration
JHMR is committed to the conservation and restoration of our natural habitat. JHMR's special use permit (SUP) includes habitat for mammals listed or proposed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. JHMR's SUP also includes habitat Management Indicator Species for the Bridger-Teton National Forest.
Water Conservation & Quality
JHMR is actively reducing bacterial and nutrient contamination in its waste water, including chemicals in snowmaking, ice-melting on walkways, sewage, and kitchen waste. Additionally, JHMR monitors levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from run-off from lift and vehicle facilities via certified external parties for EPA compliance. JHMR draws all of its snowmaking water from the Snake River Aquifer and does not incur any other major water demands.

Our Process

The environmental health of Jackson Hole is vital to the future and to our guests. We are committed to developing our goals for mitigating our carbon footprint and measuring our progress now and into the future.

Develop A Climate Action Plan
We are developing a Climate Action Plan (CAP) to guide our values, business practices and future. Our CAP will define standards for reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, set our clean energy targets, re-think our purchasing strategy and align our partners values. We are committed to protecting the environment we depend on.
Set Emission Reduction Targets
Setting our Emission Reduction Targets is an important part of our environmental process. We are currently growing our fleet of vegetable oil maintenance trucks, exploring options for electric fleet vehicles and snowmobiles, increasing the number of fuel-efficient snow cats on hill and incentivizing commuting for guest and employees.
Monitor Progress
We are committed to staying transparent on our progress and the current state of our environmental goals. We know that change does not come overnight, keeping a close pulse on where we stand will keep us accountable now and into the future.
Stakeholder Alignment
We are making a concerted effort to work with local and non-local stakeholders that match our environmental initiatives. From free START Bus passes for all of our employees and season passholders to vetting our national partners sustainability actions, this process is key for pushing us forward.

Our Partners
