Jan. 13-19 - 30" of fresh powder deluged onto our slopes since our last Conditions Report! Winter has shown up in a big way this month and we're super grateful for fresh tracks and abundant smiles. A massive THANK YOU to Jackson Hole Ski Patrol and Jackson Hole Backcountry Guides, Lift Ops, Grooming and all other teams that have helped open the mountain safely amidst abundant snowfall and increased avalanche risk. Speaking of, the snowpack is quite dangerous right now; if you're planning any backcountry travel, use extreme caution, and if you don't know...don't go. And now, Dr. Huckinstuff's weekly recap:
Woooo! Just what the Doctor ordered. The sense of a wild, winter whiplash continued this week as another 30 inches fell on the upper flanks of the mountain, boosting base depth readings back into our more typical range. The Martin Luther King Jr. weekend kicked off with a blast of cold pow that tended to hang in the light alpine air, putting on a refracted photon show after being slashed by speeding ski bases. The bone chilling conditions lasted through the holiday, sharpening the stellar crystals on the slopes and testing the chops of ski wax techs around the valley. By mid-week the deep freeze had moved on allowing for a more comfortable slope sliding situation. The warm air came loaded with a hefty bonus dose of wind-driven powder pleasures, pushing avalanche danger into the red and keeping the shredding focus on the increasing inbound treasures. Along with the new overnight snowfalls and sun splattered afternoons came daily expansion of the skiable terrain, as the patrol dropped ropes on many previously closed classics. Most notably the Lower faces and Hobacks joined the roster to the delight of local and visiting powder junkies alike, creating new dimensions of Rendezvous Mountain travel options. Yes indeed, so far 2024 has delivered a crazy turnaround here in the Tetons and as we approach the weekend with generally unsettled weather stretching off into the horizon, a reinvigorated sense of hopeful jubilation has settled into the Village. Thanks to Winter's welcome wet kiss, powder cravings have been(temporarily) satiated and the collective soul of Jackson Hole basks in the glow of post powder-plundering bliss. -Lege
