Nestled in the heart of the Teton Range, Jackson Hole is a destination that shines year-round. However, there’s something uniquely magical about October—a time when the summer crowds have thinned, wildlife is on the move preparing for winter, and breathtaking landscapes are bathed in autumn colors. Whether you’re a nature lover, adventure seeker, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, here are the top reasons you should plan a visit to Jackson Hole this October.

Ride Jackson Hole's Iconic Aerial Tram

Open through the first week of October, experience the legendary tram as it whisks you 4,139 vertical feet to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR). In just 12 minutes, you're at an elevation of 10,450' and are greeted by Corbet's Cabin and jaw-dropping 360-degree views of the Teton Range and Jackson Hole. Don't miss catching a glimpse of Corbet's Couloir, the venue for the world-reknowned Kings & Queens of Corbet's Freeride Competition. This is truly a can't-miss experience when you visit Jackson Hole in October.

If adventure is your goal, climb the Via Ferrata or go hiking at JHMR. The Via Ferrata is open for reservations during the first week of October. Hiking trails from the tram summit remain accessible through the tram's summer closing date; hiking trails remain open in October past our summer closing date, although please be aware that lift operations and on-mountain services will be closed. Hike up and down and please pack out what you pack in!

The Magic of Fall Foliage

By October, the leaves in Jackson Hole have turned into a brilliant tapestry of red, orange, and gold. The cottonwoods and aspens light up the valley, creating a stunning contrast with the evergreen forests and the towering peaks of the Tetons. Take a leisurely drive through Grand Teton National Park or along the Snake River, and you'll be treated to panoramic views that seem almost too beautiful to be real.

For a more immersive experience, explore the area on foot. There are numerous hiking trails that lead through these colorful forests. Popular trails like the Taggart Lake Loop or the easier Phelps Lake Trail offer breathtaking views of both the foliage and the majestic Teton Range.

Witness Wildlife in Transition

Jackson Hole in October is a wildlife lover’s dream. Autumn triggers key wildlife behaviors that make this time of year exceptional for animal sightings.

  • Elk Rut: October is the tail end of the elk rut (mating season), a spectacle you won't want to miss. Male elk, known as bulls, can be seen battling for dominance, and their distinct bugling calls echo through the valleys. A visit to the National Elk Refuge or Grand Teton National Park provides prime viewing spots.
  • Bears Preparing for Winter: Both black bears and grizzlies are in hyperphagia, a state where they consume massive amounts of food to prepare for hibernation. It's common to spot them foraging for berries, and they are often visible near roadsides or hiking trails. Always keep your distance and stay bear aware.
  • Bird Migration: Many bird species, including bald eagles, osprey, and trumpeter swans, are preparing for or are in the midst of their migration. A visit to the Snake River is ideal for birdwatching during this time. Fall is an excellent time to book a guided fishing trip, not only for the unique Snake River Cutthroat and foliage spectacles, but you're likely to see these majestic birds from the water as the undulating current carries you downstream.

The quieter atmosphere of October means you can experience these incredible wildlife moments without the summer crowds, giving you a more intimate and special experience.

Outdoor Adventure in Crisp Autumn Air

If you're looking for adventure, Jackson Hole has plenty to offer in October, with the added bonus of cooler temperatures and stunning scenery.

  • Hiking & Mountain Biking: With the cooler weather and fewer people on the trails, October is perfect for hiking and mountain biking. The Jackson Hole area offers excellent multi-use trails for bikers and hikers of all skill levels, while the Grand Teton National Park is a hiker’s paradise. The weather can be unpredictable, so dressing being prepared and planning ahead is key.
  • Horseback Riding: Many of Jackson Hole’s ranches offer guided horseback rides that let you take in the autumn landscape in true Western style. There's nothing quite like riding through the golden meadows of the valley or along the base of the Tetons.
  • Fly Fishing: October is one of the best months for fly fishing in Jackson Hole. The Snake River, along with the area's other blue-ribbon trout streams, offers excellent fishing for Snake River cutthroat trout, a unique subspecies native to the area. The cooler weather means fewer bugs, and the fish are more active preparing for winter, making this an ideal time for anglers.

Photography Heaven

October is arguably the best time of year for photographers in Jackson Hole. The dramatic lighting of fall, combined with vibrant foliage and active wildlife, creates endless opportunities for stunning shots. Whether you're a professional photographer or just looking to capture vacation memories, you’ll find inspiration just a short, beautiful drive from town. Be sure to visit iconic spots like Schwabacher's Landing, Mormon Row, and Oxbow Bend for postcard-worthy images of the Tetons.
