Via Ferrata is an alpine adventure rapidly growing in popularity in North America. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is home to over 15 different Via Ferrata routes on an ever-expanding course. Still new to the United States, the name Via Ferrata evokes a sense of mystery and begs the question: what is a Via Ferrata?
History
Via Ferrata, which translates to "iron path" in Italian, has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. Originally developed in the Italian Dolomites as a means of moving troops through the mountains during World War I, Via Ferrata has since evolved into a thrilling adventure sport enjoyed by outdoor enthusiasts worldwide. The concept involves a series of steel cables, iron rungs, ladders, and bridges strategically fixed to rock faces, enabling climbers to traverse and climb with confidence. Via Ferrata routes offer a unique blend of hiking and rock climbing, combining the thrill of vertical ascents with breathtaking views and a sense of adventure. Today, Via Ferrata routes can be found in various mountainous regions around the globe, offering individuals of different skill levels the opportunity to experience the joy and excitement of scaling cliffs in a controlled manner. Pictured above is Connie Kemmerer, who brought the Via Ferrata to JHMR during her family's tenure as owners. A big thanks to Connie for her passion to bring such an exciting and unique climbing experience to our mountain!
How To
When embarking on the Jackson Hole Via Ferrata, climbers are outfitted with a harness, helmet, and approach shoes. Groups are accompanied by an experienced guide who provides instruction and coaching (and takes all the best photos). Along the routes, climbers attach themselves to the metal cables using a system of carabiners and lanyards, known as a Via Ferrata set. As climbers progress on the route, they use a combination of iron rungs, steps, and natural holds on the rock to ascend.
